Take Down Notes: IELTS Reading Test (Academic)

What should you expect in the Academic reading test? You should know that it will slightly be harder than the General Training version. The Academic version will have 3 passages instead of 4 or 5. Getting an IELTS online training or classes will get you some tips and tricks to getting higher band scores. Usually the first passage will be the easiest; eventually it will get more and more difficult. Here are some of the tips you will need.

The first thing you need to watch out is to follow the instructions. If it says that you need to answer in 5 words, don’t exceed or lack words. That can be one of the factors to bring down your band score. Do take note that the use of articles (a, the, an) will still count as one word. If you undergo review programs like an IELTS online review or a review class, you will get used to keep watch of the limitations and instructions to avoid carelessly losing points; to which a lot of test takers are guilty of.

Another thing is to be quite conscious of the amount of time you will be spending for the passages. Remember that the last passage will be the hardest, so you might want to allot more time for the last one than the first. If, by chance you don’t know yet how to answer a certain question, skip it first to save time. You can get an IELTS online review to practice. Some of the IELTS online training courses will help you train to do some time management to help you answer.

Subsequently, you must learn the art of skimming. You don’t exactly need to read and absorb the whole passage. Instead, try to remember the main points of each passage. This takes some practice to get the hang of it. You can try out a bunch of practice tests given in an IELTS online review so you won’t struggle much in the actual test.

Lastly, give some time to transfer your answers on the answer sheet. Do keep in mind that you only have 60 minutes for all three passages. You can feel free to write your answers on the booklet, but your score will be based on what is written in the answer sheet.
