IELTS Hacks: Fun Ways to Prepare for the Writing Test


As an IELTS test taker, it is imperative that you make the most out of your preparation period to secure your band score goals. How you spend your training time significantly affects your exam performance. From a random person and a scenic tourist spot to a fictional creature and a history-making event, describe a captured moment to the best of your writing abilities. This writing exercise is best done with a peer. Have your friend select an image from a series of down-turned photographs of well-known topics, then, in a limited amount of time, do your best to interpret the picture with words. Give your finished composition to your friend and let him/her guess the subject of the image.

  • Eat and write. Channel your inner food blogger. Go on food trips and document your experiences with words. Recount the food's taste, aroma, texture, and appearance. Sketch out the establishment's location, the restaurant's ambiance, and - if there are any - the staff's hospitality.

  • Define abstract concepts. Challenge your writing skills and express intangible concepts. For instance, how would you depict the color "blue" to a blind person? How would you describe unconditional love to a child?
